why do we need to work on grounding?
I talk about getting grounded a lot and whoever I work with privately our first session is really understanding what this means and how to do it.
Being grounded is two-fold from my perspective.
It’s learning how to come back to centre and find an anchor within.
It’s getting our electromagnetic field back into resonance with nature.
The benefits of getting grounded
Modern life is SO incredibly ungrounding, from daily stresses, the busyness of modern life, constant pinging of our phones, work pressure, financial pressure, daily ‘threats’ and ‘triggers’, global news…. the list goes on…. It’s incredibly ungrounding for our nervous system. Modern life causes this feeling of running on overdrive and to top it off we become addicted to this feelings; we get addicted to the chemicals released in our body (a conversation for another day).
Ungrounded energy is too much energy in the mind and can manifest as overthinking, anxiety, stress, nervousness, being fearful, overly negative, overwhelmed, poor sleep etc.
In terms of our electromagnetic field things like technology, phone mast, radiation, flying etc, disrupt our electromagnetic field, and puts us out of alignment with nature, and our natural rhythm. (I talk more about this below).
When we are grounded we feel….
Calmer within
Able to think more clearly
We’re able to stop negative chatter
We can be in the moment without needing to be distracted
We are more in charge of our emotions and less reactive
We are able to see through different lenses
We’re more optimistic
More resilient in the tough times
We are connected more to the energy of appreciation then lack
We’re more joyful
If you have a busy mind like I do, you might want to consider taking a few minutes each morning to ground and centre your energy, and sprinkle some practices throughout your day.
In my day, I like to ground myself before meetings, talks, private session and I do it every single morning.
If I’m overthinking, or feeling the glimmers of overwhelm creeping in, or thoughts of worry I will pause and immediately come to some centring and grounding practices.
Coming back to centre
If you practice yoga, mindfulness or meditation you most likely have a sense of this even if you’re not aware of it. These practices are teaching you how to come back to your body, breath and pause. The ‘Centre’ for you could be any where in your body but it has to be in your body. Being grounded is not outside of us but within us. Breath plays a large role in connecting to the present moment and coming to centre. So breath, awareness and being in your body is coming back to centre.
It’s not quite as simple as that because it needs to become a feeling within. When doing yoga, meditation and mindfulness based practices regularly you are strengthening your relationship with ‘centre’ and your ability to come back to centre in hard times.
The more we connect to this place the more resilient we can be when ‘shit hits the fan’, to the onslaught of negative thoughts, to the person that triggers you each day, to thoughts of fear and worry, to daily stresses that we all have!
Learning how to come back to centre and feel grounded within in probably one of the most valuable things you can learn in life.
Grounding your energy
As mentioned modern life is very ungrounding as it takes us out of alignment with the natural rhythms of nature. Not only do we not eat seasonally, rely on the sun for light, but flying and technology but us in dissonance with nature.
We all feel fantastic when we get out into nature whether it’s wild swimming, being in the mountains, walking on the beach, being in the park or even having some chill time in the garden.
Seeing a horizon and not having a narrow focus on a screen does wonders for our nervous system alone.
Getting your bare feet on the soil, in river water and connecting to the earth for 20 minutes allows our nervous system to discharge excess energy and it helps to bring us back into resonance with nature. This is what the science is showing us and more and more researching is being done. Regardless of the science notice how you feel after spending some mindful time connecting to nature and being present. Simply enjoying the moment.
In winter, I don’t manage to connect my feet to the soil as much, but I do often put my hands on the grass or on a tree, take some deep appreciative breaths and enjoy being present. It helps me come back to centre and ground my energy. It’s really so soothing and the much needed mini break my energy needs.
In the old days we used to be bare foot or wear leather shoes so the earths electromagnetic field could always be connecting to us. Rubber souled shoes block the current from the earth.
APPRECIATION
I speak a lot about appreciation and gratitude and it shows up again for us here. Learning to appreciate nature and see through the lens of awe and wonder is going to help you feel more grounded. Feel more connected to the moment and have a greater zest for life.
